Astrolabe

Astrolabe

The astrolabe from Greek is a kind of astronomical instrument. It is used in many tasks from measuring the height of the stars to determining the latitude circles. In the past, there were no literal clocks used today to measure time. The instrument called astrolabe was used to measure the position of celestial objects such as the sun and stars in the sky. Time was measured according to this measurement. In this way, sunset and sunrise hours could be determined.

It consists of a combination of fixed and moving parts. The part where all the parts are joined is known as the body. The part of the plate with the name of the spider shows the position of the bright stars. The spider is the moving part of the astrolabe. This movement is known to follow the path of the Sun observed from the earth. There is a ruler behind the body. With this ruler, the height of a celestial body on the horizon is determined.
